LEAX Group Zrt. is a medium-sized company in Mezőkövesd, not far from the economic and industrial center of Hungary, Budapest. The production plant is a member of the multinational firm, LEAX Group and specialized on low volume-high mix production. The core competencies are CNC machining and assembly. The company works with a wide range of contractors to make high-quality products – even in smaller batch sizes.
Since an operator is often responsible for multiple machining centers, production planning is a challenging task. Planners must find out which parts could be machined in parallel with others to optimize machine time. Without data collection it is just a try-and-error loop. But based on real-time information all the machining capabilities can be exploited.
Engineers in LEAX Group targeted better production parameters with significantly lower downtimes on each machine. Besides they stepped forward to reduce the waste. Based on the collected data they would have a visualization of active- and downtimes.
By installing the sensors on six individual machining centers, the building of the database started three months ago. One of the main advantages is that using the new sensor technology they did not have to allocate more human resources on data collection and management. They planned the placement of the sensors with the help of Haris Digital and they are planning the extension of the new data collection method for the whole shop floor.
Within the first few days, machining downtimes significantly decreased – the operators quickly got used to the new measuring methods. Even if the machines are in the focus of the metering, the workers also become more efficient. They are using their time more effectively, the OEE indicators reaching the level of 80%. With these outstanding results, LEAX Group is looking forward to the development of the data collection system.
